Chung Cheng Intellectual Property

About the Firm

A Taiwan IP firm, working for
foreign counsel and rights holders.

Chung Cheng began in 1991 as an accounting firm. Chung Cheng Intellectual Property was established in 2017 and is led by Jack (Chieh-Kai) Yang; the two firms still work side by side. Today we act as the Taiwan counsel foreign firms and rights holders rely on to file, protect, and litigate in Taiwan.

Positioning

Depth in Taiwan, not just filing.

A filing agent answers a form; Taiwan IP turns on how a matter is carried through Taiwan's own examination and court practice. A trademark registrable elsewhere may be refused in Taiwan on distinctiveness; a patent claim survives or fails on Taiwan examination and amendment practice; a dispute turns on the technical examination procedure of the IPC Court. Our work begins there. For foreign firms it means a Taiwan correspondent who handles the matter to Taiwan standards — and, where it helps you decide how to file here, maps how Taiwan differs from CNIPA and other neighboring offices.

Integrated Capability

An IP practice, with corporate and accounting support in-house.

The firm is, first and foremost, an intellectual property practice. What is uncommon among IP firms is that company registration, accounting, and the tax treatment of technology equity can be handled in-house — through an affiliated CPA practice (Chung Cheng Certified Public Accountant) and innovation consultancy (Chung Cheng Innovation Consulting Ltd.) — rather than referred out. For foreign clients establishing or restructuring in Taiwan it means IP and corporate questions are coordinated through one point of contact; for most matters it simply runs quietly in the background.

First an intellectual property practice; company registration, legal, and accounting support run in-house, quietly, behind it.

Beyond Taiwan

A Taiwan core, with reach beyond when you need it.

Taiwan is where we practice. When a matter reaches beyond Taiwan, the firm works through a network of local law firms to coordinate filings abroad — including via the Madrid Protocol (trademarks), the Patent Cooperation Treaty (patents), and the Hague System (designs) where the applicant qualifies through a member country; Taiwan itself is not a member of these systems. This is an extension of our work, not its center: we do not hold ourselves out as practicing foreign law directly. Jack (Chieh-Kai) Yang is a Taiwan Patent Attorney who passed the USPTO Patent Bar in 2020 (not registered). He prepares draft US applications and office-action responses in Taiwan for registered US practitioners, who review, sign and file them and handle all communication with the USPTO, including examiner interviews. Preparing the drafts in Taiwan reduces translation drift and examiner-communication cost.

Network note

  • Foreign filings coordinated through partner firms when a matter requires it — via Madrid / PCT / Hague where the applicant qualifies (Taiwan is not a member)
  • Languages across the team — English · Mandarin · Korean · Italian

How We Work

Three commitments.

  1. 01

    Commercial-first counsel.

We advise on what protects and advances the business, not on filings for their own sake.

  2. 02

    Transparent, predictable fees.

Fees are scoped and quoted per matter before work begins.

  3. 03

    Integrated, not siloed.

IP, corporate, and tax questions are advised together, by one team.

Start a conversation.

If you are evaluating Taiwan counsel for a matter in Taiwan, we are glad to discuss the jurisdictional questions before any engagement. Fees are quoted per matter.
